BBC Star Salaries - How Much the Top Stars Earn

List of highest-earning talent at the BBC. We examine the income and how the stars could structure their taxes.

The BBC published its annual report for the 2016/2017 year at 11am this morning. Normally the report includes information about the corporation's performance, outlook, viewing figures and goes over the business of finances and spending. The corporation took in £3.742 billion in licence fee revenue in 2015 and £3.787 billion in 2016 - a rise of £45 million - and employs around 21,000 people worldwide.

Remuneration information previously was limited to details of the number of people earning earning over £500,000 to over £1m but did not name anyone. This year the spending section was expanded to include specific details of stars who earned over £150,000 per year due to a change in the BBC Royal Charter.

Exact figures were not published, with the Beeb instead taking the option to categorise its stars earning over £150,000 into salary segments of £50,000 apiece.

Sums shown in the list below are remuneration received by BBC employees for work directly attributable to the BBC - additional amounts paid to production companies on behalf of a star's show are not included. Graham Norton's Friday night show, for example, is produced by an external production company which then pays Norton. This is much like how its predecessor, the Jonathan Ross Show was produced by his 'Hot Sauce' production and therefore the company was paid and not Ross directly. Incidentally, seven years ago Ross's £6m a year contract led to pay row.

The BBC restricts total talent pay as a percentage of their internal content budget to around 15 percent. In 2015 the corporation spent £200m on talent (12 percent of their internal content budget - and a decrease of 4% year-on-year). In 2016 the corporation spent £194m on talent (11.5 percent of their internal content budget).
