Basic rate taxpayers can now register online via the Government's new online form in order receive information about transferring part of their tax free allowance to their partner.
From this April, the start of the 2015 tax year, one member of a marriage/civil partnership will be eligible to transfer up to ten percent of their allowance (equivalent to £1,060 this year) to their partner. The scheme is intended for people who are basic rate taxpayers only, so people earning more than £42,385 in the 2015/2016 tax year will miss out.
At the basic rate of tax (20%) this will allow an individual to receive up to £212 off their tax bill. The allowance change is to implemented by a change in tax code. Tax coding notices normally go out around the end of March so presumably those applying late will have a different adjustment.
Couples should register online at gov.uk/marriageallowance for HMRC to later email them with further information.
