Over 50,000 Taxpayers Claim Working From Home Expenses

The evidence-free allowance was increased from April 2020 due to the pandemic.

More than 54,800 claims have been submitted for an enhanced tax relief available for employees.

Employers are now allowed to pay up to an extra £6 a week to an employee to help cover costs of working from home.

Payments of up to £6 are tax-free without evidence. An employee can use an online HMRC portal to make a claim to adjust their tax code to reduce the tax payable. They can also apply after the end of the tax year to make a lump sum claim.

The tax relief received is based upon the tax rate of the employee - so basic rate taxpayers receive a 20 percent reduction in tax on the expense received, this could be up to £1.20 a week (£62.40 a year). Higher rate rate taxpayers (40%) would receive up to £2.40 a week (£124.80 a year).

There are also many other expenses that employees can claim tax relief on, from uniform cleaning through to professional fees, tools, travel costs and more.

Our tax relief and expenses calculator can calculate and show how much tax can be saved as well as create a computation.

The HMRC tax refund portal allows employees to directly claim their tax refund without needing to go through a third-party agent.
