Time Running Out As 3.4 Million Still To File Tax Return

28 percent of tax returns are still outstanding with only a week left until the deadline... Tick-tock!

HMRC's got a message for the 3.4 million people yet to file their Self Assessment: time's almost up! So far, 8.7 million people have filed their taxes for the 2021-22 year, but that still leaves nearly 3.4 million folks who need to hurry and get it done.

Last year, over 10.2 million people managed to get their tax returns in on time - don't be the one left behind this year! The January 31st deadline is approaching fast, so don't delay and get it done now.

Don't forget, the first instalment payments on account for for the 2022 to 2023 tax year is also due on 31 January. If you haven't paid what you owe by the end of January, you may be hit with an initial £100 fixed penalty. Plus, if you miss more deadlines, you could be facing extra charges of up to £900 or 5% of the amount due.

If you're worried about paying your estimated tax bill this year, don't panic! You can split it up into manageable chunks, as long as you're up to date with your tax return and owe less than £30,000 - you can use Time to Pay on GOV.UK to spread the cost out over 12 months.
