Christmas Day Downtime Sees 5,000 Tax Returns Filed

As per tradition, HMRC releases the figures for Self Assessment Tax Returns filed over the festive period.

The final deadline for the 2022-2023 Self Assessment Tax Return is now just a month away (31st January 2024) and thousands of people have been using this past weekend's festive break window to get their finances in order.

As is now tradition, HMRC today released the numbers of Christmas tax return submissions.

From Sunday to Tuesday (Christmas Eve to Boxing Day) near 26,000 tax returns were filed through HMRC's online website. 9,000 on Christmas Eve, 5,000 on Christmas Day and 12,000 on Boxing Day. All three days saw a peak submission between 12pm and 1pm, with 850, 400 and 1,100 tax returns pushed through respectively for each day.

Over the Christmas period last year 22,000 tax returns were filed - so this year actually saw a 4,000 increase, around 20 percent!.

The ratios of tax returns filed for each day are the same but the number of people filing has increased so there is a trend of more people taking advantage of a little free time to get their finances in shape and put away the anxiety of the dreaded tax bill.
